Mono Men – Wrecker – Estrus Records
Having only lived in Bellingham for the past four years, I must admit I never saw the legendary Mono Men, though I remember when I told my friends that I was moving to Bellingham, they almost all mentioned that was the birthplace these legends. Plus, I knew all about Estrus so needless to say I was excited escape the vast shithole known as Eastern Washington and move to a city with a good music scene.
While the Mono Men have now been defunct for a number of years, Estrus Records has re-released Wrecker so all of us musicians out there can be reminded how much our own bands blow compared to them. Though I never heard this album when it came out originally in 1992, I can safely say it is still as relevant a release as it was thirteen years ago, if not even more today in the midst of the garage rock revival.
You can’t safely tag the Mono Men’s music under just any genre, but they definitely dabble in a very Mudhoney-esque form of garage rock. It’s also notable that the band doesn’t need to rely on speed to get their music across (as some bands in the genre do) that is accomplished with the huge balls the music has.
