Cat’s Meow – Cat’s Meow

With the economy in shambles, it’s nice to know that a few people still have the time to make terrible novelty records. Or is it? Ladies and gentlemen, welcome The Cats Meow, a band of humans pretending to be cats while singing not-so-lost novelty show themes from the 80′s and 90′s. They cover themes from “Macguyver,” “Full House,” “Inspector Gadget,” and “Dinosaurs,” to name a few. They meow everything depressingly off-key, acapella, and… well, that’s it. The idea alone would make Weird Al cringe, and that seems to be the point of this horrible collection of meowing. “Can’t play an instrument? Can’t sing? Can’t talk?! No problem, let’s just see how annoying we can be in order to get our CD reviewed in What’s Up! magazine!” Like I said, these guys have a lot of time on their hands.

Trouble is, they kill all nine lives before hitting the one minute mark. In reality, they kill any sense of anticipation simply by being stoned enough (I hope these cats were on something when they thought this through…) to have such a frisky idea in the first place. But ANYWAY, if you do for some reason decide to listen to this, you’ll quickly discover that these tracks sound nothing like their TV counterparts. “Heathcliff” demands the listener to look at the sleeve to see what theme is being meowed — lest they forget the joke! — but I can’t imagine any listener being so ambitious with this album.

Curiosity, coupled with bad taste and severe laziness, never does one much good, but no one should be expected to stomach this catnip. “Those cats sure do watch a lot of TV!” the album sleeve proclaims, and I imagine the cats acting like cats do, too. But they sure don’t listen too hard, otherwise they would’ve left this dump of songs in the litter box they dug it out of.
