Flow Theory – Flavoris
I must admit that I am having a hard time pulling Flavors by Flow Theory out of my CD player. The versatile, genre bending album has something for everyone in regard to musical styles ranging from ambient, politics and children’s songs.
Mastermind Terrill Thompson has created a crafty book of work that flows from song to song, keeping the listener involved and interested. For example, the lead track was right up my alley. Thompson quickly shows his direction in this comparison of the rhetoric used by our previous Commander-in-Chief versus our new President. Pretty sobering stuff backed by cool Middle Eastern-flavored, ambient feedback. The record then begins its journey into every music style imaginable. The mood then jumps to the Hip-Hoppy “Every Day to the folksy “PHP 7.0 Alpha” to the 60′sish “Paul Allen Song” which sounded a bit like the tune “Earn Enough for Us” by XTC, which I have been addicted to lately. Politics come back into the frame again on the hysterical “She,” a song about Sarah Pallin, chock full of mind boggling samples from the former Governor of Alaska turned Facebook blogger. More folk songs followed by the infectious, snazzy, spoken word “Haiku,”which had me snapping my fingers and calling my dog Daddio. Very entertaining. “Sitting Down with Spain” takes us back to reality. A scathing sample filled composition that discusses the unthinkable position of the radical conservative leaders of America in regard to holding discussions with other countries around the world. In this case, John Mc Cain’s refusal to hold discussions with Spain during the 2008 campaign season. Flow Theory pulls no punches in regard to their politics. It is so refreshing and informed.
In regard to product in and chops, Flow Theory hits it out of the park. Tim Brown and Actual Air deliver big time with crisp, top notch engineering and Mr. Thompson, besides being a innovative lyricist and singer is an explosive guitar player.
