Those Darlins, King Khan & The BBQ Show – Nov 20 – Nightlight

Over the last few years, Bellingham Sunday shows have begun creeping up and with mixed results. Sometimes there’s a full crowd and great energy, then others, it’s more subdued and up to the performers to create the excitement from the stage. On this particular Sunday night show, what should’ve been a full crowd with great energy was more a tiny crowd and subdued, until the first band hit the stage.

Those Darlins opened the show (last minute addition Styff Anyss was subsequently dropped from the bill) and before the first chords were even strummed, the crowd knew their show held some real possibilities instead of allowing the crowd to hide in the shadows, they implored everyone to come right up to the stage. Dutifully obeying, the 40-50 patrons walk to the front and Those Darlins began their rock ‘n’ roll onslaught.

Hailing from Tennessee, the 4-piece, which includes three women up front two on guitar and one on bass, all of whom switched instruments throughout the night, cranked an inspired 40-minute set full of countryfied rock ‘n ‘roll. With each song, the crowd’s amazement increased by not only the incredible music being played, but with its intensity. Full out inspired rock ‘n’ roll. To 40-50 people. It was damn near perfect.

Which made following Those Darlins a little difficult for King Khan and BBQ Show. Unfortunately, do to apparent apathy and sound problems, Kiing Khan and BBQ Show fell flat at times very flat. The show started off well enough, the crowd was still energized from Those Darlins, but as sound problems continued, BBQ’s mood got worse and worse, to the point he pouted out of frustration mid-way through the show for a few songs. Not exactly what yer looking for with a high energy, eccentric garage rock band. By the end of the show, the band tried to pull out from the bummer, but it was unfortunately too late.

All in all, though, it was a great show. Small town Sunday shows can be a little rough for bands, and it was for King Khan and BBQ Show, but Those Darlins made heading out on the Sabbath well worthwhile.
