Femme Uke – Self Titled

There’s really no way around it, Femme Uke are a fun band. Consisting of Laine and Ashley (the Ukie Sisters), the band plays sexually charged, booze-soaked songs ukulele smut folk as they like to describe it some together, others bouncing back and forth while playing a ukulele. And the music is as cool as it sounds.

Their debut disc is very raw and features the songs they’ve been playing around town, including F@!k Uke, Munchin’ and my personal favorite, F’Uked Up. The sexually charged songs (enough to make me blush I can only imagine what their families think) are little snippets of brilliance, not just trash talk, but really funny songs that leave the listener thinking, “wow, did they just say that?” While the lyrics are the core of the band, it wouldn’t work without their fun melodies or great flow. The ditties stay in your head for days and days, long after you last listened to the disc.

The only downside to the disc is the rawness, the recordings sound like they were done at home on a portable recorder. For a first time, that’s cool, but it also makes me long for when they get into the studio and really make the vocals sound as cool as they can. Just having them sing through a top-notch microphone would make a difference.

But, really, that’s just a minor element of an overwhelmingly fun CD from a damn fun band.
