Tim Mechling – The King EP

The good thing about this music is that you get to hear stuff you would otherwise never hear. I felt really fortunate as I put on the new CD by Tim Mechling, whose Pavement/Sgt. Pepper influence collection captivated me with its wierdness and charm.

The King EP starts out with the funny “Reminate the Corpse of Elvis” with its big chorusy sing along hook and loud guitars. The record stays along those Magical Mystery Tour signposts especially with “The Ballad of Raymond Strange,” which kind of fit into this record as “Flying” did on MMT.

I don’t want to get carried away with comparisons here, but Mechling really hits the mark with these recordings. He steps back into more psychadelia with “Put Him Back in the Ground,” complete with squawking birds, killer drums and that dude who always laughs when any hallucinogenic trip is portrayed in any sense on TV. Pretty crazy, warranting numerous listens in my case.

Mechling takes a crack at religion in the poignant “Preacher pt 1,2,3,” citing the hypocrisy that is oftentimes prevalent in such circles. The song then becomes an all-out jam with clanging guitars, screaming organ and lots of emotion, then culminating in a conclusion which states that “no one will ever see the light again.” Enjoyable for sure.

Other highlights included, but are not limited to, “The country like Mrs. McArthy” with its Steve Malkmus twang and cheeky lyrics.

I recommend that everyone goes out and checks out Tim Mechling. His act is fabulous.
