CD Reviews – June 2011 – Kels Boreen: Life Is Too Sweet

Somewhere between the campfire and the beach, Kels Boreen’s album, Life Is Too Sweet is a chilled out creation that’s part Ben Harper, part Ray LaMontague, and whole lot of soulful crooning and heartfelt lyrics.

Boreen, who recently founded new record label One Tree Records, has been perfecting Life Is Too Sweet over a couple years, while collaborating with a multitude of musicians and instruments.

The album starts strong with the track “By Donation”, which sounds more reggae influenced. The combination of Boreen’s soothing voice and a plethora of instruments produces the sound of a band you’d hear jamming out by the beach.

The second track, “Crazy Mind” is a little more sultry, but with a Jack Johnson feel. It’s a more jazz-esque: a let’s-unwind-after-work-with-a-glass-of-red-wine kind of a song.

Aptly named track, “Life Is Too Sweet”, is a fine blend of strings, a mix of soft and raspy vocals, and a mournful sound suitable for TV drama show finales.

Towards the end of the album lies one of the strongest tracks, entitled “Well”. This folk acoustic masterpiece soothes with syrupy violin and lachrymose lyrics. It’s a testament to love lost, and about the continuation of life afterwards.

Life Is Too Sweet explores the sounds of life’s emotions while providing music that’s both intriguing and enjoyable to people from all walks of life. It is certainly music you can live to, love to, and think to. And who doesn’t love an album like that?
