Sanoma

Sanoma is a Finnish word that means to teach using a parable, and the most recent EP from the band is made up of stories and imagery that offer meaning. Desertion, love, the return of a prodigal and the redemption of a criminal are some themes explored in songs that can be described as both haunting and hopeful. Narrative lyrics are set against a backdrop of an acoustic guitar, the reverb and tremolo of vintage amps, and the sweet resonance of a hollow body guitar. The music combines old time mountain and surf influence with the down beat sensibilities of bands such as the Red House Painters and Mojave 3. Nate Beede’s steady baritone is complimented by Liana Bumstead’s sometimes angelic/sometimes sultry harmonies, while Cory DeMent handles all things rhythm like a seasoned craftsman. The result is beautiful, thought provoking music that has much to offer anyone who will listen.
